Yves Rossy.

Yves Rossy was born on August 27, 1959, in Neuchâtel. He is an airline and military pilot who became an inventor.

Passionate about the air, he tried everything: hang gliding, paragliding, skydiving, sky-surfing, ultralights, but his search for freedom was not satisfied. He wanted to recapture the sensations of his flights, as in his military career on Hawker Hunter and Mirage III. It was when he discovered freefall and wingsuit flying that a new dream opened up to him: that of flying with as few constraints as possible.

With these experiences, the Swiss pilot remained hungry for more: "it's very short and only allows you to go in one direction." He then decided to look for a way to fly like a bird. Through trial and error and perfecting his invention, Yves eventually developed a portable wing that allows him to fly using his body movements.

After 15 prototypes and 25 years of development

He achieved a functional version: a rigid wing with a 2.5 m wingspan, equipped with jet engines and powered by kerosene. In 2004, in Yverdon, it was a great victory: he successfully completed his flight attempt. In 2006, he improved his invention by adding two additional thrusters, which now allowed him to ascend and thus achieve total freedom in the air. Since then, the one nicknamed Jetman, the flying man, Rocketman, or Fusionman, has completed over 1500 flights. A true birdman, Yves Rossy is capable of flying at astounding speeds exceeding 300 km/h.

2008 was a prolific year:

• In May, he made his first official flight over the Swiss Alps, in front of an astonished audience.
• Then, in April, his wings were exhibited at the 35th Geneva Invention Exhibition.
• Finally, on September 26 at 2:19 p.m., Yves Rossy accomplished a historic feat: thanks to his invention, he successfully crossed the English Channel, 99 years after Louis Blériot. This exploit was broadcast in 165 countries, and media outlets around the world talked about it!

Always on the lookout for new challenges

The Vaud native then flew over the Grand Canyon in 2011. But more recently, Yves has turned to the future of his invention, seeking successors. This is how, in 2014, he embarked Vince Reffet and Fred Fugen, world champions in skydiving and Base-jumping, on a new adventure: flying in formation with an Airbus A380 over Dubai. Today, Yves Rossy is no longer worried about his succession and now shares his extraordinary experience with the general public.
